Background. Most criticism of shale gas development focuses on (1) potential environmental impacts to air, surface water, and shallow groundwater from flowback and produced waters and (2) the potential for “stray gas” incidents where deep hydrocarbon gases intercept shallow water supply wells after hydraulic fracturing activities. In order to make effective decisions regarding the nature and magnitude of these environmental concerns, best management practices to characterize hydraulic fracturing waste streams must be developed and made accessible to government, industry, and the general public. These protocols will enable industry to comply with environmental regulations and reduce public concerns associated with safety and environmental protection during gas shale development.
