Background. A significant number of companies have approached Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd. (SPDC) in connection with products and services they can provide to assist in the remediation of oil spills, many claim that their products and methodologies can remediate oil-impacted soil and groundwater very quickly and efficiently. Objectives. The objective of the trial was to measure the relative performance of various additives in the ex situ bioremediation process used by SPDC to remediate of crude oilimpacted soils. The measurement of performance was relative to a control where no additives or products were used, such that the marginal effect of the additive or product could be isolated.
