摘要

Recent advances in molecular biology tools (MBTs) have made it possible to more directly evaluate and document biological processes responsible for contaminant degradation in both natural and enhanced groundwater systems. These tools provide a novel data set that cannot be ascertained from traditional analytical techniques, and therefore offer insight into the genetic characteristics of the microbial community including species identification and/or their capability to complete a desired task. For example, MBTs can be used to identify why biostimulation is not working at a particular site and to help determine whether bioaugmentation may be needed. They may also be used to support primary datasets in instances where tracking biodegradation products is not feasible, as in the case of the anaerobic biostimulation of petroleum hydrocarbons. MBTs are also critical in monitoring the success and performance of bioaugmentation, when applied to a site. This presentation will use case studies to highlight the value and practical use of MBTs at bioremediation sites.
