Personal Protective Equipment Acceptance as a Result of Global Approach of Risk Prevention: a Review

PPE wearing is a recurrent problem in prevention policy. Important work is made, in trying to insure and to assess PPE efficiency, especially though technical research. A lot of ergonomic research is also carried out in order to insure comfort and physical adaptation of PPE. Numerous standardisation actions are carried out to assess quality of PPE and to support users in making their choice. So PPE plays an important role in decreasing injuries in many different workplaces, but this is true if, and only if. Personal Protective Equipment is worn! The presentation will be a digest from a review concerning PPE wearing, in which will be reminded, through some results: 1. ergonomic factors and their relation with PPE acceptance; 2. psychosocial factors that can explain differences in PPE wearing; 3. cognitive factors that may influence the effective use of PPE; 4. prevention policy in the companies, as an important factor in enhancing PPE wearing. As a conclusion will be given some principles which can increase the acceptance of PPE in the general frame of a systemic approach.
