The man-technique-environment system can be listed among particularly complex ones. The relationships between specific elements of the system are complex and interacting with each other. The recent research conducted by the authors, as well as the data obtained from the world literature have proved that the reasons for most of the accidents happening in industry are: material factors, organisation of work, organisation of work stand, individual protective equipment. It seems that much more often than shown in the official statistics the reason for accidents is wrong organisation of work. A special attention should be paid to the increase of the number of accidents caused by the wrong organisation of work. The underestimating of irregularities appearing during work may herald further deterioration of occupational safety and increase of the dangers of accidents in establishments. The paper presents the analysis of the influence of various factors on the occupational safety. Besides traditionally described technical and organisational factors, another important element has been highlighted, which is the culture and education of the staff. On the basis of the research the assessment of particular factors influencing the occupational safety and health at work has been analysed. In the summary the directions of the improvements aiming at minimising the accident risk are given.
