Physical Modeling of the SMART Major Components

As a simulation-based design tool, a transient simulation model of an integral reactor plant, SMART, has been developed using a commercially available computer code package, Modular Modeling System (MMS). For the SMART model, as for any large simulation, custom coding was needed to supplement the modules to model plant specific systems and features. Several MMS modules are developed which represent the non-standard major components of the integral reactor, such as a once-through steam generator, self-pressurized pressurizer, core, preheater, etc. An MMS SMART model is then developed by combining the developed modules with the standard modules from the MMS Macro library. The whole plant system, including the plant control logics, is modeled as one integrated model. Benchmark calculations have been carried out in order to verify the developed MMS modules and the SMART model. The analysis results of the MMS SMART model were compared with those from design computer codes and showed good agreement.
