Absorption spectra have been studied in linearly polarized light of rare-earth orthoaluminates DyAlO_3 oriented in the "ab" plane over the wave-length range of 748-780 nm at T=77 and 300K. Peculiarities of absorption spectra (in two orthogonal polarizations) are connected with optical transitions between Kramers doublets of the ground ~6H_(15/2) multiplet and the excited ~6F_(3/2) ones in the Dy~(3+) ion in the orthoaluminate structure. The comparison of data on optical polarization studies with the results of magnetic susceptibility measurements along the axis "c", having the Van-Fleck nature, allows the conclusion about a purely "Ising" character of the eigen states of the lower Kramers doublets of the ground multiplet of Dy~(3+) in DyAlO_3.
