APPLICATION OF NEW TECHNOLOGY IN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS IN SINGAPORE

Developments will continue at an increasing pace in the future and a review of the emerging technologies reveals what could be applied to public transport systems in the future when the technology has matured enough. A few possibilities of what these could be are digital TV reception on vehicles increasing use of composite materials which could include bodyshells, novel and smaller shape motors, use of GPS technology to track and control train movements, remote diagnosis, telemetry, etc. The application of new technology in public transport system will only be considered and implemented if this bring about increased features which lead to a better quality of service to the commuters at affordable prices. Several projects involving the use of latest technology in the areas of power electronics, computer technology, communication, etc are now in progress. Many of these projects will be completed by the turn of the century. The harnessing of technology for use in public transport system will continue to be one of the several key areas which the Land Transport Authority will focus on in its quest to build a world class land transportation system in Singapore.
