Powder nature is a serious drawback for gas-phase application of microporous high surface area activated carbons produced using activation with alkaline hydroxides. The attempts to make adsorbent in granular form consisted on the direct activation of pellets prepared by molding under high pressure of mixture of activating agent with mesophase pitch [1] and oxidized coal [2] or pressing the activated carbon powder with a suitable polymer binder [3]. Both approaches have some disadvantages, including complicated procedure and, in the second case, unavoidable partial pore blockage by binder.
