Coal tar (CT) has been used as an important raw material for advanced functional carbons such as binder, anodic carbon for Li-ion battery, carbon fiber, carbon foam, and C/C composites. To manufacture such carbons, it is essential to remove the impurities for obtaining target physical and / or mechanical properties. Almost impurities of CT are usually composed of primary quinoline insoluble components (primary QI) in CT. Among several purifying methods, the solvent-non-solvent method has been considered as a most effective. removal method of primary QI, in which solvent first induces dissociative dispersions of CT into small domains, and then non-solvent gives rise to the aggregation of QI species to be precipitated.
