Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and X. o. pv. oryzicola (Xooc) are two critically causal agents of rice blight and rice streak diseases, respectively. On nonhost plants, the pathovars rapidly elicit a localized necrosis known as the hypersensitive response (HR). HR and pthogenicity is determined by a hrp gene cluster. Up today, an intact hrp cluster has not cloned from either of the pathovars. We used diethyl sulfate (DES) mutagenesis to get hrp mutants from the pathovars and survey their pathological and biochemical behaviors on a nonhost tobacco and the host rice.
