DNA molecular markers of genes for disease resistance of crops provides a useful aid in crop breeding for resistance and genetic mapping of resitance genes. By 1999, 63 stem rust genes (Sr2 approx Sr45) have been designated but DNA molecular markers closely linked to Sr genes is quited limited. Gene Sr31 sourced from 1R/1B chromosome substitution or 1BL.1RS translocation remains effective against Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici for many years in all countries whereas the linked genes Yr9, Lr26 and Pm8 have been neutralized by the pathotypes of the respective pathogens. DNA marker of Sr31 was developed by RAPD analysis for more effective identification and utilization in wheat disease resistance breeding.
