Rapid differentiation of rice black-streaked dwarf virus from maize rough dwarf virus

Rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV) and Maize rough dwarf virus (MRDV) are closely related but distinct viruses. The most difficult problem in diagnosis occurs when maize plants are infected with either RBSDV or MRDV because both viruses develop indistinguishable symptoms and they are serologically related. So, the antibody to each virus used in ELISA cannot distinguish them. This made the previous disease diagnosis of maize questionable unless the causal viral genome is sequenced.
