Maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV) has been reported in many countries. Its epidemics have caused severe quality and yield losses in maize and sorghum since late 1960s in North China. MDMV belongs to Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) subgroup of the genus Potyvirus with a positive-sense ssRNA genome encoding a single polyprotein. A Beijing isolate of MDMV was identified as MDMV-B (now referred as SCMV-MDB) based on its biological properties. Several other isolates from northern China have been identified as the same strain according to their serological and biological properties. The coat protein (CP) gene of the isolate has been cloned and sequenced. Since the deduced protein sequence is different from the conceptual translation, i.e., there are 3 mismatches (Ala at positions 135, 188 and 208 to Phe) and one unexpected amino acid (aa) (Gly instead of Asp at residue in the published CP sequence, further verifying the CP sequence and determining its relationship with SCMV-MDB is needed.
