Cucumber yellows virus (CuYV), the causal agent of yellowing disease of cucumber and muskmelon plants in Japan, has long, flexuous, filamentous particles and is transmitted by greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum. The particle shape, insect transmission, and host range characteristics of CuYV were similar to those of beet pseudo-yellows virus (BPYV) a member of the genus Crinivirus, the family Closteroviridae. Recently, we have successfully extracted double-stranded (ds)RNAs from CuYV-infected cucumber leaves, amplified cDNA by RT-PCR, cloned and sequenced.
