This paper describes a concept for an improved shock test machine that would be used to verify the ability of shipboard installations to withstand shock loadings which may be incurred during wartime service. The machine would provide improvements over the weight capacity of current machines and have the unique capability of testing the combined effects of direct shock and bubble pulse loadings. Currently the Navy has two shock test machines for the shock qualification of equipment. These machines are known as the Lightweight Shock Test Machine and the Medium Weight Shock Test Machine. Heavy items, above 7,400 pounds, are tested on a standard or large floating shock platform with a live fire UNDEX (Under Water Explosion) loading. In addition, the Navy does live fire UNDEX testing on the Submarine Shock Test Vehicle (SSTV), Full Scale Section (FSS), or the A/B-l. The current shock test machines have weight limits and only test direct shock inputs using the direct blow of a hammer to the base of the equipment. Heavy items tested using an UNDEX event on one of the test vehicles do not normally allow for a bubble pulse loading due to physical restraints of charge locations in the various test ponds. The concept presented herein would expand the weight limitation to 50,000 pounds and would include bubble pulse loadings of range of frequencies.
