Comparisons of Flat and V-Shaped IPMSM in Electric Vehicle Compressor for High Efficiency

Air Conditioner (AC) is one of the most consuming subsystem in Vehicles. In accordance with the supply of Electric Vehicles (EV) and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV), the efficiency of AC becomes important affecting the maximum driving distance. Thus, the belt-driven compressor used in traditional vehicles is being replaced by Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) for independent operation and according improvement in efficiency and power density. However, the IPMSMs previously designed for AC were developed with Flat-shaped PM and Fractional Slotted Concentrated Winding (FSCW) to reduce the noise due to torque ripple although low efficiency is the expense of that. In this study, to improve the suitability for EV and HEV, v-shaped PM and Concentrated Winding are applied to achieve small losses and high power density being compared with an existing model with flat-shape PM and FSCW using FEA.
