The Navy Joining Center (NJC) is working on a project to establish the nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of kissing bonds within adhesive joints used in Naval aircraft structures. For adhesive joints, a kissing bond is defined as a type of flaw in which the interfacial surfaces of the adhesive and adherend are in intimate mechanical contact but have little or no molecular bonding between them. Because there is no separation at the interface, kissing bonds can escape detection by conventional NDE inspection techniques. This inability has limited the application of adhesive bonding on primary Naval aircraft structures. The project assumes that the technology for detection of kissing bonds exists but needs to be validated. To evaluate the kissing bond detection capability of an NDE technique, adhesive joints containing well-characterized and controlled kissing bonds are being developed as reference standards. Several approaches to the fabrication of reference standards have been pursued. Details of the fabrication of kissing bond reference standards and subsequent detection capability results are presented. In future work, sets of reference standards will be distributed among several experts who will attempt to detect, with potential NDE techniques, the presence of kissing bonds within a set.
