Composite failure criteria have been developed to characterize the initiation and progression of fiber damage, matrix failure and interply delamination. The proposed progressive failure criteria have been encoded as a user-defined material subroutine for use in a commercial dynamic analysis code. The integration of composite failure criteria within a macroscopic continuum computer code provides the opportunity to effectively describe the nonlinear behavior of composite materials due to the progression of local composite damage. The proposed approach was successfully utilized to predict damage and residual burst strength of thin composite tubes subjected to drop weight impact tests. The availability of a dynamic analysis code for accurately predicting the progressive damage in thin composite shell structures will greatly facilitate the development of reliable light-weight filament wound pressures.
