The current uncertain economic future makes it particularly risky to invest in new technologies and new products. The risk is further compounded by the longtime that separates revenue from the initial R&D investment decision. In this paper, we explain how implementing a Stage-Gate process, reduces investment risk, maximizes the return on R&D spending, accelerates revenue, facilitates nimble adaptation to changing business conditions and raises the credibility of R&D funding requests. We examine which factors in the implementation of a Stage-Gate process are critical to delivering these benefits.
