There is an increasing trend to develop steels components by near-net-shape forming technologies, in order to obtain more competitive products. In the case of forging, cold and warm forging processes can be included in this type of technology. In warm forging the steel is directly heated to the forming temperature (usually inthe range from 600 to 900 deg C) and deformed at this temperature. This process offers certain advantages over traditional forging, including better utilization of material, improved surface finish and dimensional accuracy compared with hot forging, and reduced press loads compared with cold forging (1-3).
