The phenomena of scale formation (oxidation) and decarburization of steel surfaces during reheating of steel stock in industrial reheat furnaces take place simultaneously and are difficult to control. Disadvantages of oxidation and decarburization include metal consumption due to oxidation and loss of surface mechanical properties due to decarburization. Factors which affect these processes include temperature, residence time in the furnace, furnace atmosphere and composition of the steel.
