The water quenching ability (water heat extraction capacity) is recognized as one of the most important parameters for DC sheet ingot casting as it controls the heat extraction rate of the process. The critical start-up phase of the cast can be affected by the water quality, which is dependent on the water chemistry as influenced by the presence of contaminants or additives commonly found in water recirculating systems. measuring the water quenching ability is the first step towards better control of the water quality fluctuation and consequently of the casting process stability. A fully automated user-friendly measuring unit has been developed to be integrated into the plant water system. This paper describes the unit and presents preliminary results with a focus on unit reliability and discrimination potential.
