In recent years, a new generation of extra low carbon copper precipitation strengthened steels with excellent toughness in the base plate has been developed. However there is a lack of welding consumables that match the balanced properties of the base plate and also there is the need to improve the HAZ toughness at high heat inputs. In this context, the present study deals with the fine tuning of chemistry of the base plates and the development of extra low carbon-welding electrodes via the flux cored and the metal core route. Alloying-structure-properties relations in the HAZ and the weld metal are discussed.
