This paper presents results from a project aimed at developing rapid assessment methods for inclusions in modem, clean steels. Such assessments are problematic due to the low incidence of inclusions in these steels. The LSHR sampler/sampling method, conventional ultrasonic, and improved automated SEM/EDA techniques are described. Also a Cold Crucible technique which concentrates inclusions on the sample surface, and a Laser Diffraction Particle Size Analyser, LDPSA, method for rapid determination of their size distribution, (performed after dissolving the matrix), are described. This multi-partner project was carried out with the aid of funding from the ECSC, which is gratefully acknowledged.
