Utilization of cost-effective materials and demands for reliable performance have resulted in a shift in the corrosion discipline to include assessment of the effects of materials corrosion on reliability and risk. How much corrosion is too much and what level of risk can be tolerated? Stringent requirements for safety and reliability place unrelenting demands on the corrosion specialist to predict accurately long-term corrosion performance on the basis of short-term tests. In addition, the development of nonmetallic materials for many engineering applications requires the corrosion specialist to study an expanding portfolio of materials not available to previous generations. Specific examples are provided to indicate trends in both the corrosion area as well as the response from the R&D perspective and the effects of trends on people on the front line carrying out corrosion R&D.
