Nanofoamed polymeric nanocomposites are a class of novel materials with many desirable properties. Emerging industrial applications, such as next generation airplanes and wind energy harvesting are particularly situated to take advantage of the unique advantages of these materials. This paper presents an experimental study on the fabrication of nanofoamed high-performance polyetherimide (PEI) nanocomposites. Various weight percentages of carbon nanofibers were dispersed in PEL High-pressure, solid-state foaming was used to create a nanoporous structure within the polymer matrix of the nanocomposite. The solid-state foaming was able to use high saturation pressure and high foaming temperatures to create nanofoamed PEI nanocomposites. The capability of creating nanometer sized features is encouraging, yet, uneven CNF dispersion in PEI remains a critical issue.
