In the Automotive Industry, engine-oil-consumption-reduction is still relevant today. A way of doing this is to modify the engine cylinder bore surfaces.This modification can be- the creation of oil reserves on the cylinder surface. Hence the lubrication time of oil-quantity is increased.- a new distribution of engine cylinder surface components the cylinder material is cast iron with carbon lamellae ; carbon lamellae are solid lubricants; if; by a surface treatment, more lamellae areon the surface, the friction coefficient can be lowered. In our work, it was attempted to create these modifications by Nd:Yag laser surface treatment and to be able to measure an amelioration of the friction conditions. To reach these surface modifications, the potentialities of different Nd:Yag laser sources (cw and Q-switched laser) were examined. Then large displacement friction-tests were conducted on these treatment surfaces. The results from these treatments and associated friction-tests are discussed below.
