Monitoring of lawsonia intracelluaris on a commercial swine farm

Porcine Proliferative Enteropathy (PPE) or ileitis is caused by an obligate intracellular organism, Lawsonia intracellularis, that infects the enterocytes of the small intestine. Infection leads to proliferation of immature crypt cells causing diarrhea and decreased growth performance in young pigs and acute death in old pigs.
