Staff turnover is a huge problem for any organization.Not only is there the loss of the skills of the person,but concern among the person's peers and subordinates about who will e hired can cause productivity to diminish.If the right match in skills and collegiality is not found,productivity may not recover and staff morale can diminish,leading to further departures.Within the Division of Computing Support Services (CSS) in the Department of Information technology and Communication (ITC) at the University of Virginia (U.Va.),use of a team approach to hiring new people,whether they are individuals to fill student or staff positions or managers to oversee groups,has allowed us to find not only the person with the right skills required to do the work,but also someone who will work well with their peers and subordinates.
