The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of lightness and lighting on depth perception of a space. We prepared two boxes, the test box and the reference box. The wall at the opposite side from the window of each box could be moved. Lightness of this wall of the test box could be changed. Subjects compared the depth of the two boxes, and answered if the reference box looked deeper than test box. We found that the lightness of the wall on the opposite side had significant effect on the depth perception, the effect, however, depends on the lighting conditions.
