California black oak (Quercus kelloggii) is a common hardwood component of the transition zone and Sierra mixed conifer forests of California. It grows at elevations between 1500 and 9000 feet with a range that extends from the McKenzie River basin in central Oregon south to southern California near the Mexican border (Harlow & Harrar, 1969).
