The application of roof bolting technology tocontrol the stability of roadways in coal mining within weak strataor under high ground pressure has improved progressively. One ofseveral factors that affect the design of rock bolting is theimmediate roof characteristics of the roadway. On the competentrocks, the mining conditions may indicate a high level of stabilityand a low density. However, at a weak strata, the roadway will beaffected by both horizontal and vertical stresses that may generate ahigh level of deformation in the immediate roof. This sensitivity ofthe roadway will require a mine plan design which consider thepillar sizes and sequences of extraction as well as a conservativereinforcement to maintain the integrity of the deforming weak roof strata.Rock bolting technology has been used to maintain the stabilityof roadways in Indonesia and Japan for a few years. In this paperthe overview of the application of rock bolting reinforcement inOmbilin Coal Mine, Indonesia and Miike Coal Mine, Japan is given.
