A fatty acid ester, methyl acetate (MA), was used to form ternary solvent electrolyte with ethylene carbonate (EC) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) to improve the electrolyte performance for lithium metal secondary cells. EC/DMC/MA electrolyte is effective in improving of specific conductivity and lowering solidifying point, however, it did not improve the cell cycling performance. An electrolyte consisting of 1.0M-LiPF_6-EC/DMC/MA(30:30:40) exhibited a specific conductivity of 6.4 mS cm~(-1) even at -20 deg C, solidifying point of below -20 deg C and a figure of merit of over 40 for lithium cycling with Li/LiMn_(1.9)Co_(0.1)O_4 cell.
