During collection, boar semen is usually contaminated with bacteria primarily originating from the prepuce. The number of bacteria preseni in neal (undiluted) semen may vary between <1.OOO to>100.000 per ml. Bacterial growth may influence sperm survival during storage, as well as insemination with highly contaminated semen causing genital infections. Pseudomonas spp, E. Coli, Proteus spp and Citrobacter spp are among the most frequent species found in boar semen. To minimise the risk of bacterial growth during storage, semen used for AI is diluted, and various types of antibacterial agents are added to the extender. Ncomycin, gentamycin or a combination of penicillin and streptomycin are the most often used. During recent years, the use of lincomycm and spectinomycin has increased due to EU-legislalion. As early as 1968 Waltz and others reported that penicillin and streptomycin were not very effective for the control of bacterial growth in boar semen due to development of antibiotic resistance.
