Combination treatment of swine glasser's disease with enrofloxacin injection and feed medication - comparison of enrofloxacin and fiorfenicol

Giasser's disease is a swine bacterial disease caused by Haemophilus parastux. Typical features of the disease are multiple serositis, multiple arthritis and meningitis. The disease is found worldwide and often reported from SPF units. The acute form of the disease causes high mortality and the economical loss in affected flocks is considerable. The aim of this work was to assess the efficacy of 2 commercially available drugs, enrofloxacin and florfenicol, totreal the disease. An outbreak of Glasser's disease was reported from a reproduction-fattening farm in southern Kyushu. In total 1200 male and female weaners (average body weight 7 kg) showing severe respiratory signs with a high body temperature (exceeding 40 deg C) were subjected to this study. All the piglets received a single intramuscular injection of 2.5mg/kg of enrofloxacin (Baytnl 5 percent injectable solution, Bayer Ltd.) behind the ear. Then they were divided into 2 equal groups of 600 piglets. One group was fed wilh feed containing150ppm of enrofloxacin (Baytril 2.5 percent EER, Bayer Ltd.) and the other group with 80ppm of florfenicol (Florocol 5, Takeda Pharm. Ind. Lid.) for 7 consecutive days.
