Although the sow is a female with spontaneous ovulation, it can be induced to some extent. According to Claus et at., there are significative quantities of estrogens in the seminal plasma, which when infused into the uterus during natural service, stimulate the release of PGF_2 alpha of endometrial origin. These prostaglandins are able to penetrate inside the follicle mediating the effect of LH during ovulation; also PGF_2 a appear to be essential to activate the proteolytic system which initiatesthe protein degradation and the lysis of the follicle. In fact, the inhibition PGF_2 alpha production by Indometacin, can inhibit ovulation. As a consequence of the techniques of semen collection, where most of the seminal plasma is rejected, together with the dilution procedures needed to transform the ejaculate into multiple seminal doses, commercial boar semen may supply minimal quantities of estrogens, which are unable to stimulate the natural release of endometrial prostaglandins. It is hypothesized that the infusion of exogenous PGF_2 alpha throughout seminal doses, will increase the intrafollicular concentration of prostaglandins, starting the process of ovulation. The intrauterine infusion of prostaglandins at the beginning of estrus can advance ovulation by as much as 12 hours, which may improve synchronization between artificial insemination (AI) and ovulation.
