Field evaluation of an inactivated vaccine against PRRS

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) is a viral disease of swine responsible for major economic losses. The disease induces severe reproductive failure in sows and respiratory disorders in pigs. This syndrome was recognised in North America. Europe and South East Asia in 1987, 1991 and 1993, respectively. The virus was first isolated by Wensvoort et al. in 1991. Vaccination of sows is able to confer protection against experimental challenge. In the field, vaccines appear to control some effects of PRRS infection. The following report summarizes the results of field trials (safety and efficacy) carried out with an oil adjuvanted inactivated PRRS vaccine, manufactured with an European strain.
