Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRSV) infection is widespread throughout the world. It has become clear that PRRS is a multifactorial health problem and clinically very variable. In some cases PRRSV infects pigs without causing any ill effects. The clinical form can affect pigs of any age. Effects primarily involve the respiratory and reproductive systems, but there is also enhanced susceptibility to other diseases. Diagnosis of PRRSV infection can be done by the serologic detectionof antibodies using the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), indirect fluorescent antibody test, serum neutralization test, inmunoperoxidase test, inmunoperoxidase monolayer assay (IPMA) and latex test. A major advantage of the ELISA is its increased sensitivity when compared to other tests. It can detect antibodies at an earlier stage than the IPMA and is simple and cheaper. Clinical outbreaks of PRRS in Venezuela began in 1996, characterized by respiratory distress, high morbidity and mortalityin piglets and growing--finishing pigs. Although the tests have been permitted in the country since 1996, antibody detection was described in 1997.
