EXPERIMENTAL CO-INFECTION WITH PORCINE CIRCOVIRUS TYPE 2 AND SALMONELLA TYPHIMURIUM OR LA WSOMA INTRACELLULARS

Porcine circovirus associated disease (PCVAD) has emerged to become one of the most important pig diseases globally. Clinical signs vary and include weight loss, respiratory disease and/or diarrhea. Although we have extensive experimental experience with PCV2, neither we nor anyone else to our knowledge has developed a model for PCV2-associated enteritis. With marked increases in the enteric manifestation of PCVAD, frequently associated with Salmonella typhimurium or with Lawsonia intracelluris; ourhypothesis was that concurrent enteric infection of pigs will predispose pigs to PCV2-associated granulomatous enteritis, lymphoid depletion of gut associated lymphoid tissues and increased shedding of PCV2 in feces.
