an industrial electron beam facility has been built by Ristron Elektronenbehandlungsservice GmbH & Co.KG in Saal and der Donau, Germany, for the pre-treatment of cellulosic pulp to make viscose. The advantages of this process over conventional treatment methods are reductions in time, chemical, environmental pollution and cost. TGhe facility is designed to irradiate stacks of pulp sheets with a throughput capacity of about 20 metric tons per hour. The electron accelerator is a Rhodotron made by Ion Beam Applications s.a. in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. This nvel accelerator achieves high beam power (up to 150 kW) with high electron energy (up to 10 MeV) by passing the beam repeatedly through a large, relatively low-frequency, coaxial resonant cavity operating at 107.5 MHz in the continuous-wave mode. The combination of high energy and high power simplifies the material handing systems and improves the efficiency o f high thrughput irradiation processes.
