This paper identifies and briefly addresses issues involved in the process of replacing legacy library systems, including: centre dot Rational for replacement centre dot Internal and external environment scans centre dot Next generation library system trends centre dot Usefulness of a vision statement centre dot Creating a budget centre dot RFP, RFI, RFQ-which to use centre dot Creating the RFx centre dot Utilizing task forces centre dot Evaluating the RFx and selecting a vendor centre cot Negotiating the contract centre dot Implementation timeline centre dot Data conversion centre dot Workflow centre dot Policy and parameter setting centre dot Training centre dot Keeping library staff informed centre dot Marketing and involvement of campus Consideration and planning for these issues up-front will facilitate a smoother transition in this highly stressful and resource intensive process. While the focus of this paper is slanted towards academic libraries, the issues and process are applicable across all library types.
