The pre-requistie for success: verification and validation of the envisat spaceraft flight operations control centre

The ENVISAT satellite is the next step in the Earth Observation Programme of the European Space Agency. It is larger and more complex than its predecessor satellites ERS1&2. The paper presents the approach to system level validation and verification of the ENVISAt Flight Control Centre that is responsible for command and control, and mission planning of the satellite during the various in-orit operation phases. Improvements that help to increase the efficnecy of the system-level testing of the mission control facilities are described. The paper concludes with some recommendations for the effective verification of large contrl systems.
