Differential Diagnosis in Cardiology: Combination of Three Approaches

Differential diagnosis is a standard technique taught in medical school. It consists of establishing a list of possible diagnoses for a patient, and then trying to eliminate some of the diseases through further testing. In this paper, three computer-assisted decision making techniques are used to assist in the establishment of a differential diagnosis list. The three techniques include a knowledge-based system, neural network modeling, and chaotic analysis of biomedical time series. The list comprises not only the possible diseases but also a degree of certainty for each disease. These techniques are illustrated in differentiating among types of cardiac disorders.
