A review of some of the basic gas turbine technology being developed at the NASA John H. Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field which may have the potential to be applied to ground-based systems is presented. The topics covered are related to increased power and efficiency (optical tip clearance measurement technique), reduced cycle design time and cost (conservation/solution element algorithm), improved thermal design (turbine tip heat transfer), reduced fatigue failures (turbomachinery aeroelasticity analysis), improved power and efficiency (wave rotors), and reduced friction and stall control (magnetic bearings).
