The Rolls-Royce UltraFan Engine - Delivering the next generation of aerospace propulsion system

The UltraFan engine architecture represents a once in a generation change in Rolls-Royce's large aerospace propulsion system architecture. The UltraFan concept introduces a power gearbox between the fan and the turbine that drives it, allowing the two components to be optimised independently and enabling higher bypass ratio and propulsive efficiency. It will be the basis of future Rolls-Royce products scheduled for entry into service in the middle of the next decade. This paper describes the strategic drivers that caused Rolls-Royce to embark upon this journey, the complex research & technology strands, infrastructural capability investment, the successes to date and the work ahead including the route to validation and verification through engine testing.
