The Trent XWB represents a significant evolution of the Rolls-Royce 3-shaft turbofan architecture, employing novel component designs and advanced technology to deliver outstandingly low environmental impact and excellent lifecycle operating cost. It is the result of a complex optimisation process underpinned by continuous advanced component research and technology development. Fuel efficiency targets for civil aviation in the longer term, however, require significant further improvement, and may demand the evolution of more radical propulsion concepts and technologies.
