Training Simulators for On and Off-Road conditions

Educational simulators are used economically in cases, where the real object to be handled is much more expensive than the simulator, for example in education of pilots or tank drivers. Advantages for training simulators are that the student can explore situations freely and that the learning is supported by hints and feedback. In the German Army tank simulators are used for training soldiers driving a tank or for training of the whole crew operating under mission conditions. Each of these simulators have its own demands according to the purpose of the simulator. In order to reduce the costs, it is not possible to simulate all the stimuli of the real world. Therefore in a training simulator only those requirements are to be considered, which are necessary to perform the task. For reason of safety and environmental pollution in the traffic, the German Army intends to use driving simulators not only for tank driver education but also for truck-driver education to get a driver license [1]. The basic step is to handle the vehicle adequately and to get the skill for safe participation in the traffic. The next step is to match the need that in an army besides on-road conditions also off-road conditions are of interest. However, it must be considered, that the demands for an on-road and off-road simulator are different.
