This paper describes the results of a recent study to quantitatively assess weather's impact on off-road vehicle performance. Basic climatic factors such as precipitation type and intensity, temperature, and evaporation are required to predict soil moisture and corresponding soil strength. This study specifically examines how much precipitation is required to effect a change in these soil parameters. Changes in vehicle speed related to precipitation will also be addressed. These data are used as input to high-resolution vehicle mobility prediction models such as the NATO Reference Mobility Model (NRMM II) in order to assist field military commanders in making planning and tactical maneuvering decisions [1].
