The main object of this study was to clear and analyse the role of horizontal displacement of soil layers beneath wheels in the development of the thrust-slip curve and in the maximum wheel tractive efficiency. New analytical solutions were derived describing the shear stress-displacement and thrust-slip relationships for arbitrary initial conditions. A vast amount of single wheel thrust-slip curves were newly processed and analysed. The role of the average contact pressure was estabilished and, using dimensionless quantities, the effect of soil type and moisture content on traction parameters was also given.
